Acoustic Ceiling Removal Process

PREPARATION:
- As much of the furniture as possible is removed from the room.
- Any remaining furniture is moved to the center of the room.
- Any remaining furniture is covered with plastic, a drop cloth, and two more layers of plastic.
- The floor is covered with drop clothes and two layers of plastic.
- All walls are "curtained" with plastic.
- Fan blades are removed from ceiling fans and masked off with plastic.
- Light fixtures are masked off or temporarily removed.
PROCESS BEGINS:
- A fine mist of water is sprayed on the ceiling and allowed to soak in.
- This is repeated as needed to help loosen the acoustic.
- The acoustic is scraped off with a 12" mudding knife.
- The acoustic is then rolled up in the top layer of plastic and taken out for disposal.
- Any exposed drywall seams, screw or nails are troweled over with joint compound once or
twice if needed to create a smooth surface before applying texture.
- New texture is applied.
- The "curtain" is pulled down while the texture is still wet and the bottom layer of plastic is
rolled up and taken out for disposal.
PAINTING:
- Once the new texture is dry, it is primed and top coated.
CLEAN UP:
- After the paint is dry, any other masking is pulled, light fixtures are rehung, and ceiling fan
blades reattached.
- Drop clothes are removed from the room and it is vacuumed before putting the furniture back
in place.
